Torere Macadamias Limited (TML)

Torere Macadamias Limited (TML) is a macadamia development company, dedicated to the establishment of a commercial macadamia industry in New Zealand. Vanessa Hayes, the founder of TML, began her macadamia research in 1983 to find the best varieties for her own orchard development. She contributed her orchard block at Torere in 1993, to trial the best dropping commercial macadamia varieties sourced from Australia and New Zealand. Rod Husband joined TML in 1996 and an enthusiastic, experienced team of nursery and orchard workers have since joined this successful innovative company.

The results from the trials at Torere were outstanding. TML were able to identify and propagate the best from those trials and successfully obtained sole propagation rights for the 'A' varieties in New Zealand.

TML built a 60,000 plant nursery in 2002 to propagate and supply these new varieties from 2004.

Continued Research & Development

TML built a quarantine facility and imported a further 15 new varieties to trial in March 2002. These varieties were identified as the world's best producers for cooler climatic areas by Ian McConachie (Australian Macadamia Society's past Vice President) and Henry Bell (ex NZ) who is acknowledged in Australia as one of the world's leading macadamia plant breeders. 

TML will identify the best from these new varieties for release and propagation in 2008. TML are committed to continue to source and trial the best commercial and home garden macadamia varieties for New Zealand growers.
