Torere Macadamias Limited (TML)

Torere Macadamias Limited (TML) is a macadamia development company, dedicated to the establishment of a commercial macadamia industry in New Zealand. Vanessa Hayes, the founder of Torere Macadamias Limited, began her macadamia research in 1983 to find the best varieties for her own orchard development. She contributed her orchard block at Torere in 1993, to trial the best dropping commercial macadamia varieties sourced from Australia and New Zealand. Rod Husband joined Torere Macadamias Limited in 1996 and an enthusiastic, experienced team of nursery and orchard workers have since joined this successful innovative company.

The results from the macadamia trials at Torere were outstanding with quality and production that substantially surpassed all macadamia varieties in NZ for kernel recovery and whole kernel percentage.  Torere Macadamias Limited were able to identify and propagate the best macadamia varieties from those trials and successfully obtained sole propagation rights for the 'A' macadamia varieties in New Zealand.

Torere Macadamias Limited built a 60,000 macadamia plant nursery in 2002 to propagate and supply these new macadamia varieties from 2004.

Continued Macadamia Research & Development

Torere Macadamias Limited built a Level 2 quarantine facility and imported a further 15 new macadamia varieties to trial in March 2002. These new macadamia varieties were identified from the AMS regional trials as the world's best performing macadamia varieties for cooler climatic areas by Ian McConachie (Australian Macadamia Society's past Vice President) and Henry Bell (ex NZ) who is acknowledged in Australia as one of the world's leading macadamia plant breeders. 

Torere Macadamias Limited will identify the best from these new macadamia varieties for release and propagation in 2009. Torere Macadamias Limited are committed to continue to source and trial the best commercial and home garden macadamia varieties for New Zealand growers.
